This classic tale tells the story of the well-born, educated but penniless Emily, played by Lydia Wilson (Never Let Me Go, About Time), who during her daily duties as a lady’s companion for Lady Maria (played by Joanna Lumley), comes into contact with her employer’s wealthy widower nephew, Lord James Walderhurst, played by Linus Roache (Batman Begins, Law & Order, Titanic).
Accepting his practical if unromantic marriage proposal, lonely Emily seeks solace in the company of Walderhurst’s handsome nephew, Captain Alec Osborn, played by James D’Arcy (Cloud Atlas, Hitchcock) and his beautiful Indian wife, Hester.
But all is not what it seems as an increasingly contented Emily has no inkling her life is actually in danger. Whilst Walderhurst risks his life overseas, his wife seems powerless to avoid the threat that begins to encircle her. The arrival of Hester’s servant, the mysterious Ameerah, only serves to heighten the jeopardy surrounding Emily.
Based on the forgotten classic novel by celebrated playwright Frances Hodgson Burnett (The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, Little Lord Fauntleroy).
